The cover of 1991’s The Punisher #47 has the dubious distinction of being the only Marvel cover I know of with FOUR artist credits: “KK” (presumably assistant editor Kevin Kobasic), “JR SR” (John Romita Sr., almost certainly), Hugh Haynes (who penciled the interior of the issue) and Terry Austin. Operation Desert Storm’s dates were January 17 to April 11, 1991; what we’re seeing here is the Australian printing, but the American edition (with the same cover copy) was cover-dated April, so the cover text would have been VERY current at the time of publication. Interestingly, the letters page includes an ad for 50% off subscriptions purchased for an Operation Desert Storm soldier. Also, what is with the scimitars everybody’s waving around on this cover?

My book “All of the Marvels,” about all 27,000+ Marvel superhero comics considered as a single story, comes out from Penguin on October 5! If you preorder it through Books with Pictures, it’ll come signed to you (or to the person of your choice), and there might be a fun little bonus thing in the package, too… the link for that is https://forms.gle/G8377BMrBWiMfdN5A .
I’m very pleased to announce the long-awaited debut of VOICE OF LATVERIA, my new weekly podcast about the complete history of Doctor Doom! https://voiceoflatveria.com
Every week, my guests and I will be looking at one of Victor Von Doom’s comics appearances, in the order he experienced them. (That’s different from both publication order and regular Marvel chronology, because, well, Dr. Doom’s the inventor of the Time Platform, which makes things more complicated.)
